Exciting, haunting, surprising : Hiroshima Joe: A Novel

Like Steve Rosse, I found this book abroad. I came across it at the British Council library in Mexico City, and was also deeply effected. I think of it often, and it really came to mind after reading John Lanchester's "Fragrant Harbor" which seems very soft edged next to "Hiroshima Joe".

You can really feel Hong Kong in this book--and not the usual high end of the city where you would expect to find an Englishman like Joe. He is clinging to the very edge of the respectability that his Englishness gives him, and the fact that others know how close he is to falling gives him a scary vulnerability. He has lost all face. He is an addict and a thief, and his loss of control leads him to abuse the only person he can imagine is weaker than he is--a child.

Taken prisoner by the Japanese during the siege of Hong Kong, Joe never goes home when the war is over. Martin Booth so convincingly sets up Joe's past that we ache for him as he is now.

Booth builds up real suspense in telling Joe's story, something that few novels manage these days when you have no doubt that the protagonist will triumph for the sake of the sequel. Joe is threatened from so many different sides that you cannot imagine how his story will end.

great story!!! : Am I My Sister's Keeper?

I suspect there are people like the protagonist who will do whatever it takes to lead a life that other people think one should lead. I was amazed that the protagonist was so adamant in her mission (and she was definitely on a planned mission) to be someone she was not. With that as premise, initially, I had a difficult time getting into the book. Once I let go and just believed that, maybe, this was based on someone's life, I just read the book for what it was: a novel. But a good novel and read it was. There were some problems with structure, transitions, and writing execution, but moving all that aside, I did like the book. I think the title is incorrect because although secondary, I don't think the sister was pivotal to the story. The ending was a little fluffy for my taste considering her parents (and the situation with the sister you saw it coming a mile away), but it didn't ruin the book. It was one of those first novelist endings that does not invalidate what came before. I especially enjoyed the outcome for Symphony. That character was well-developed and made the right choices for her. Kudos to the author how all that ended. Ms. Stephens didn't go for the TV/Hollywood ending in that subplot. I'm looking forward to her next book.

Talkin' bout my generation... : Teeth

I really wanted to like this book. Hipster Hugh Grant--purveyor of the East Coast Head, writer for Dirt magazine, underground sensation--has written a terrible first novel. This barely disguised autobiography painstakingly chronicles every detail of Grant's life following the demise of Dirt (here dubbed Dusted) and his subsequent failure to continue writing. A novel about writer's block? Why not just publish your diary, Hugh? At least that way we wouldn't have to suffer through your myriad awkward re-namings of key Gen-X trendies (River Phoenix becomes Nile Waters, Drew Barrymore is Gertie, and worst of all, 2 popular bands are merged to become Rage Against the Chili Pepper). The first chapter or two are interesting enough, but Neil's/Hugh's ceaseless self-pity and masochism quickly become too much to bear. I read the entire novel hoping for redemption but experienced quite the opposite effect--it just got worse and worse and worse, losing all sense of direction before finally careening into a nauseating, poorly devised ending. I can only hope future efforts from the once-impressive Grant are on par with his previous writings. I haven't read anything this painful since Prozac Nation.

Action, suspense and passion - what more could you want? : Never Cry Wolf

Wow. This book was amazing. Even without reading any of the other books in the Night Watch series, I loved this book. Cynthia Eden has a way with words that sucks you in until you've read the whole book without taking a break. Now I'm going to go and hunt down the other books in the series because I'm curious if they are as good as this one.

What I liked about it.

1. The plot was very fast-paced. There wasn't a dull moment in the book anywhere. Something was always happening.
2. The emotions of the characters reached out to me and I could feel their frustration, their anger, and or happiness depending on the moment of the book. None of the emotions displayed seemed off or forced in any way.
3. I wasn't left guessing what things looked like, smelled like, and or sounded like. Cynthia, the author, packed the book full of details but not in an info dump. She creatively added them in throughout the plot.
4. The secondary characters included in this story added to the story and didn't take anything away from it. If it wasn't for the secondary characters, I'm not so sure if the book would have been as good.
5. I liked the fact that Sarah King, the main female, was a charmer (low end of the supernatural world). Prior to reading Never Cry Wolf, I've never heard of a `charmer' before.
6. The `heat' in the book was HOT and stayed that way all the way through the book.

Now for some readers I realize they don't particularly care for books that have a lot of cussing in them. Never Cry Wolf does have a few curse words - not a lot but enough you do notice them. I wasn't bothered by them but I thought I should warn others.

If that plot is a trifle transparent--no one will be surprised by Amanda's miraculous recovery or by the children's eventual battle with the nefarious forces of industry in an attempt to save their great-grandmother's farm--neither reader nor character is the worse for it. Out of Character : Wish You Well

I'm still not quite sure what to make of Baldacci's Wish You Well. Despite the hype, this is not a literary novel, although it does sometimes come close, but rather is industrial mainstream fiction aimed to sell well and not to challenge our preconceptions of the world. As long as you view it as just that - a industrial novel - you will be satisfied with this book.

In 1940, Jack Cardinal dies in a car accident that leaves his wife Amanda in a coma and his two children, Lou (short for Louisa) and Oz (Oscar), without a caretaker. Lou acts on her parents' last conversation and suggests the surviving family members go to Virginia to live with great-grandmother, Louisa, whom none of them has met. So off the three go: Lou, Oz, and comatose Amanda. There, Lou and Oz gawk a hard but rewarding existence in the mountains where coal and poverty rule. They come to love Eugene, also known as "Hell No", brilliant who is a resourceful but uneducated orphan, and, most of all, Louisa herself, who has many lessons to teach the children.

Although the plot is somewhat predictable and Baldacci populates his Virgina mountains with a supporting cast of types (the greedy coal company men, the abusive man who tends to his mare's foaling despite his wife's difficult - and simultaneous, of procedure - labor, the black man who gets respect only from the good guys), Baldacci goes added with his main characters. Pre-teen Lou is well imagined, even if she sometimes acts too old for her age. Louisa, Lou's great-grandmother, has the most commanding presence of all the characters, with her mountain hardness tempered by a generous heart; her past and present all feel real, true to life.

You'll enjoy this book as long as you don't expect high literature. Baldacci knows how to tell a story, and how to tell it well, leaving his readers with a firm sense of resolution. You won't find page-turning suspense here, as you will with his other bestselling books, but you will gawk a new side to this author. As a literary novel (which some people claim it is), I would give it three stars; as a mainstream industrial one, I'd give it five.

Wow! : The House on Tradd Street

Charleston is my home so I am more than aware of the ghost stories that surround the homes in the city. We (Charleston natives) happen to believe most of them! This book was so intriguing, I had to make myself put it down! The places such as restaurants and shops are surely correct. Buy the book, you will keep it on your shelf and re-read on a stormy, chilly, windy day! I can't wait to buy the sequel. Fyi, Ms. White keeps her novels on the clean side of romance.
